Celebrating the Humanities: A Half-Century of the Search Course at Rhodes College
Published in Paperback by Vanderbilt Univ Pr (December, 1996)
Authors: Michael Nelson and Jean Bethke Elshtain
Average review score:

READ THIS BOOK!
Mr. Nelson is god. One should read everything that he writes. In two thousand years people will be awaiting the second coming of Mike Nelson. Rhodes is a wonderful college, and I wish that I had been wise enough ( in my college days) to shun Yale for such a personalized undergraduate education

Ceramics a Potters Handbook
Published in Paperback by Holt Rinehart Winston (01 January, 1960)
Author: Glen Nelson
Average review score:

A great book for beginners as well as seasoned ceramicists
A wealth of knowledge can be found in this timeless book that covers all the major aspects of ceramics.

For the novice, it covers the the world's history of ceramics. Discusses clay and glaze compositions and gives step
by step explanations of the various techniques from wheel throwing to hand building to making plaster molds for
slip casting.

For the advanced ceramist, there is good information of various kilns and their construction. It offers analysis of
several major clays, frits, and feldspars as well as other useful reference tables including some recipes for
glazes from low fire to high fire.

I first bought the book in '82 as a college freshman and it has proven a valuable aid ever since. It is on the top of
my "required reading" list for anyone interested in getting involved with studio ceramics.

Changing Seasons: 1954-1980 (Honest Women)
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (February, 1996)
Author: Betty Palmer Nelson
Average review score:

Southern Storytelling at It's Best
As richly textured as the rest of Nelson's work, this book brings the Honest Women series to a satisfying conclusion. Nelson writes with grace and a sympathetic eye for human frailties. Never one for clear-cut conflicts and easy solutions, Nelson portrays life at its most convoluted and, sometimes, frustrating.

Chased by the Sun: Courageous Australians in Bomber Command in World War II

Chased by the author
I'm Hank Nelson, the sole author of Chased by the Sun. I do not know of Richard Green. The book is a paperback.

It has had excellent reviews in Australia, but I'm hardly the bloke to make an unbiased judgment.

I have used the review space in order to make the correction

Checklist for Life
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (August, 2002)
Author: Thomas Nelson Publishers
Average review score:

Practical advice for living a life of faith
With its bright yellow cover and bold type, one might confuse Checklist for Life with another bright yellow book--one that is selling like hotcakes in bookstores across the country: Worst-Case Scenarios. But unlike that humorous book, Checklist for Life is all about real life, as explored from a perspective of faith.

The topics in this book cover everything from dealing with anxiety to discovering joy. Appropriate and thought-provoking quotataions and scripture passages highlight the well-written text, but it's the practical "I Will" and "Things to Do" sections are what make this different than a typical devotional or inspirational book. Each of these sections give practical suggestions for putting into practice the wisdom from the main text. Even if the reader only follows through on one or two of the ideas here, he or she will be taking real steps toward relational, emotional, and spiritual growth.

Only two small quibbles. The title suggests a book that offers an organized checklist for all of life's many trials. However, with just 66 topics, not every life situation is covered here. (There are three other books in the series, however, targeted specifically for Men, Women, and Teens.) And then there's the subtitle: "The Ultimate Handbook". It seems a bit over-the-top--but I suppose that's what marketing folks get paid for. Nevertheless, once a reader dives into Checklist for Life, he or she will soon discover that this is more than a throwaway read. Recommended for new Christians and those far along in their faith as well. The high quality production makes it a great gift too.

Checklist for Life for Teens

Great for Teens and their Parents!
Having the opportunity to teach the "after school Bible study" for pre-teens, some of which have had no interaction with the Bible, I searched and found this 'Ultimate Handbook'. I showed it to several of the parents of the children involved, and the parents are picking out which lessons I should teach next with great excitment!

This book shows these pre-teens how the Bible relates to their lives, wheather it is "over-reacting" (teens don't do that!), "self acceptance", or dealing with rumors, cliques or gossip. These topics can all be found in the Bible, but the Bible is a big book, and this handbook not only covers it, but shows kids where in the Bible to find the answers.

In addition, it talks to the kids using the "proper lingo". Some of the chapter titles are "Dissed" (dealing with respect), "Let's get Real" (dealing with honesty), and "Totally Awesome" (Maintaining a Sense of Wonder).

There are also chapters that are more suited for the high school students such as "Weight of the Wait" (Sex and Intimacy), "The Ex-Files" (Handling breakups), and "Endless Possibilities" (Planning for the Future).

The basketball coaches are so excited about the values and life-coping lessons in this book - those that they are unable to teach at the public school, that they are cancelling basketball practice (one day a week) so the children can attend the study!

My turnout for the study has been about 98% of the 5th thru 8th graders in the whole school................... What else can I say.............. if the kids come to listen, it must be worthwhile!
